An Analysis of Skin of Color Content on TikTok

Wells et al [3] previously evaluated skin of color (So C) posts on the social media platform Instagram, with findings identifying that dermatologists are underrepresented among those producing So C posts. Considering the exponential growth of Tik Tok, we aimed to perform a similar study evaluating the credentials of “influencers” who produce So C dermatologic posts on Tik Tok. Data were collected from Tik Tok in March 2021.

Ensuring the inclusion of dermatologic photos of all Fitzpatrick skin types is necessary to eliminate existing disparities related to skin of color (SOC) and to promote more equitable representation on these websites [14].  The majority (348/398, 84.7%) of patients felt comfortable with their deidentified photos being used for teaching, and this rate decreased when involving an intimate body area (232/398, 58.3%) [4,9].

The quality and quantity of images were then compared between the SOC and non-SOC groups using the Student t test. Percentage of skin of color (SOC) to non-SOC photos on the Wikipedia list of skin conditions. Average quality rating of skin of color (SOC) and non-SOC photos. a N/A: not applicable. We identified 421 skin disease Wikipedia pages and 949 images that met our inclusion criteria.
