Using Social Media to Recruit a Diverse Sample of Participants for a Mobile Health (mHealth) Intervention to Increase Physical Activity: Exploratory Study

In this paper, we aim to detail the social media campaigns we used to recruit participants for “Diabetes and Mental Health Adaptive Notification Tracking and Evaluation” (DIAMANTE), an RCT testing a smartphone-based intervention (described below) to increase physical activity for individuals with diabetes and depression. Specifically, we aim to evaluate the performance of social media platforms for research recruitment and the associated costs by population and platform.

Uncovering Social States in Healthy and Clinical Populations Using Digital Phenotyping and Hidden Markov Models: Observational Study

“Digital phenotype” is a broad term referring to a quantified digital behavior (such as the use of smartphone apps) or behavior measured using a digital signal (such as movement measured using GPS). These measures avoid issues of recall bias as they are objective and can be acquired in real time as participants go about their day, meaning they have high ecological validity. A popular tool to collect digital phenotyping data is the smartphone.
